SELECTED CURATORIAL PROJECTS

2011
Mass Distractions and Cultural Decay,
Rutgers University, Mason Gross Galleries, New Brunswick, NJ
an exhibition based on critical German theorists', Theodore Adorno, Max Horkheimer and Walter Benjamin critique of "Culture Industry" with more than 150 artists that deploy strategies and techniques to counter and subvert culture industry ideologies that promote racism, classicism, nationalism, militarism, sexism, imperialism, colonialism and consumerism.

2010
Chitra Ganesh and Simone Leigh: Divine Horsemen,
Rutgers University, Mason Gross Galleries, New Brunswick, NJ
Through their two-person collaborative process artists Chitra Ganesh and Simone Leigh respond through various tropes and material to Maya Deren's 1981 film Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti. Both Ganesh and Leigh are interested in complicating the binary relationships between the participant / observer and the insider / outsider. Through wall and floor drawings, sculptural works and craft materials Chitra Ganesh and Simone Leigh challenge the histories of the anthropologic and ethnographic gaze in Deren's film by excavating hidden visual languages and discourses that both exceed and question the Euro-American canon.

2010 Planet of Slums, Rutgers University, Mason Gross Galleries, New Brunswick, NJ (Traveling)
2010 - 2011 Planet of Slums, Third Streaming, NY, NY
Co-curated with Omar Lopez-Chahoud
Planet of the Slums addresses the rapid changes taking place mostly in Latin America's
overpopulated urban centers. The housing markets have been targeted by privatization
efforts, thereby reducing poor people's access to state-subsidized housing The result has been an explosion of slums around the globe. In Planet of Slums, Mike Davis offers a comprehensive study of the present urban conjuncture and shows that favelas, inquilinatos, callejones, and barriadas have become the essential feature of the global picture. More than 20 artists ranging in mediums from photography, film, video, drawing, printmaking sculpture, installation and new media. The works explore, document, and reflect on dilapidated buildings, industrial landscapes, wastelands, as well as the potentiality of public places. In the show, artworks that aim to raise awareness about industrial and natural disasters are seen alongside works that abstract urban histories. Some use documentary tropes to investigate the social and political impacts of man-made disasters, while others capture the fast-paced transformation of urban environments in order to engage the notions of memory, loss, decay, detritus, as well as alienation and vulnerability.

2009
James Hyde
, Rutgers University, Mason Gross Galleries, New Brunswick, NJ
In this first apearance of James Hyde's Four Compositions From the Stuart Davis Group, he continues abstract investigations by sampling three photographic details from twentieth century painter Stuart Davis' Report from Rockport 1940 and one photographic detail from Davis' mural for Studio B, WNYC, Municipal Broadcasting Company 1939 (both Metropolitan Museum of Art). The Davis' convey the vitality, speed and tempo of American life in the mid-twentieth century with an emphasis on jazz as a metaphor for the progressive tempo of democracy. In Four Compositions From the Stuart Davis Group, James Hyde has worked with the vernacular of jazz to produce new compositions that contain refreshing rhythm, speed and tempo in the twenty-first century.

2009
Paul Moakley: Shore Points,
Mason Gross Galleries, New Brunswick, NJ
Paul Moakely's photographic works based on New Jersey's Shore Points. Influenced by the dramatic visual techniques used by 18th century romantic artists like Theodore Rousseau, his landscapes depict dramatic brooding skies, light and weather changes. The portraits of the inhabitants and local visitors break objectivity with close subjective intimacy similar to influential photographers like Mary Ellen Mark and Bruce Davidson.

2009
Robert Melee: Robert Melee Mobile,
Rutgers University, Mason Gross Galleries, New Brunswick, NJ
Robert Melee Mobile, is not your typical chandelier. It is an assortment of household items, craft and kitsch, a clash of abstract beauty and the grotesque. In the video projection, This Is For You Backdrop, Melee compresses ten years of documented footage shot on at least four camera formats; color, black and white and super-8 film, from encounters with lovers, friends and family into a 20-minute loop. Melee orchestrates similar dynamics of the choreographer – dancer and mother – to son incorporating theater, dance and performance, integrating a host of characters and behaviors.

2008
In Suspension Show,
Rutgers University, Mason Gross Galleries, New Brunswick, NJ
Co-curated exhibition with Mason Gross Dean's Office, Dennis Benson and Movis Group
out of Princeton, NJ, Twenty-Two sculptural works suspended, by world renown artists; Alexander Calder, Marcel Duchamp, Geoffrey Hendricks, Dennis Oppenhiem, Charles Ray, Douglas Vogel and more.

SELECTED WORKSHOPS/ COMMUNITY OUTREACH

2011
Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, Pittsburgh PA

In conjunction with my solo exhibition Documentary and Divergence, I produced a workshop with eight students discussing how to use self-portraits to question issues of race and class in America. In a three-day workshop students produced a series of self-portraits collaboratively and independently. Each series was accompanied by a series of eight critical questions; one from each student that analyzed affects from deceptions and social constructs in mass media imagery.

2008
Harm Reduction Coalition, Newark, NJ

Project Coordinator, Allen Frimpong used A Mother to Hold (2006 film) and The Notion of Family (2002-2007) as the core of a curriculum. My mother and I spoke with young men facing criminal charges.

2006
Carrie Mae Weems Social Studies 101, Syracuse, NY

In Social Studies 101 with Carrie Mae Weems, I conducted workshops with local families in the Southwest Community Center discussing the development of the project and collaborated with teens teaching them how to photograph their own family, reality, history and memory.

2004
Relatives As Parents Program Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Attended support group meetings for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren in Central New York. Went on home visits with interested grandparents, producing collaborative images that depict their relationship with their grandchildren. Images from the series were used to urge George Pataki to sign the Caregiver Consent Bill (S.6818/A.11079) into law at the State level.
